Thousand Islands Land Trust - Job Description: Summer Land Steward

The Summer Land Steward of the Thousand Islands Land Trust (TILT) is an hourly position that reports to the Stewardship Coordinator.

The Summer Land Steward assists TILT trustees and staff to better serve TILT's mission. During summer months, TILT expands its property management on wildlife preserves, conservation easements, and recreational facilities and trails. The Summer Land Steward’s responsibilities include: assisting staff with conservation easement management; helping to manage and maintain all TILT- owned recreational facilities and trails; assisting with outreach through TILTreks & Talks and summer events; and office support. All summer staff have the opportunity to learn about the workings of a land trust, become familiar with local ecology, and gain experience in land stewardship and management techniques.

Primary Responsibilities:
I. Land Stewardship

1. Assist TILT staff with the maintenance of fee-owned preserve and conservation
    easement files and research
2. Assist with all aspects of summer outreach through TILTreks & Talks
3. Assist in the conservation easement annual stewardship and monitoring
4. Work with staff and volunteers on preserve and trail maintenance projects;
    marking preserve boundaries and trails, etc.
5. Monitor fee-owned preserves and structures for use

II. Land Protection

1. Provide support for Baseline Report/Management Plan data collection and assemble files
2. Provide office administration support
3. Write news releases and related articles for media and outreach
4. Attend weekly staff meetings and take office notes

Secondary Responsibilities:

1. Collect trash within preserves and along public roads adjacent to TILT properties
2. Work with volunteers on various projects as needed
3. Assist with all aspects of summer events

  • Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation and a good driving record
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel
