Jake Tibbles, Director of Stewardship

Jake & Jax As Director of Stewardship, Jake maintains TILT's land records; compiling data, monitoring conservation easements, and assisting land owners in understanding their easements. He works closely with TILT's conservation partners, like the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and Ducks Unlimited. He also supervises seasonal land stewards and volunteers, and plays a key role in TILT's community outreach.

A graduate of SUNY Cortland with a degree in Environmental Science, Jake first helped TILT during an internship in 2007, when he helped with a Blanding's Turtle survey, and researched the impact of shoreline development on NY State fisheries. During college he studied rainforest ecology and coastal marine biology in Belize and became a certified diver. His knowledge of wildlife and background in biology will be great assets to the stewardship program.

Jake grew up in Redwood, NY and knows and loves the Thousand Islands region. He hikes, fishes, hunts and enjoys water sports. He has a keen appreciation for the importance of the St. Lawrence River system and is pleased to have the opportunity to work in its behalf. Contact Jake.

Star Carter, Director of Land Conservation

Star & Moose Star Carter is from Kailua, Hawaii and graduated from the University of Hawaii with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science in 2002.  While in Hawaii, she worked at Pacific Environmental Corporation and Clean Islands Council as a wildlife technician.  She helped develop wildlife response strategies during oil spill events, and participated in the rescue and rehabilitation of oiled sea birds during the 1998 Chevron spill.

Star's conservation experience in Hawaii fostered a love and appreciation for unique ecosystems and wildlife, something she has found again here in the Thousand Islands.  She has worked as a lab technician, horse wrangler in Wyoming, Secret Service officer in Washington DC, and an ophthalmic assistant.  Most recently she joined Clayton Island Tours as the naturalist for the ecology program, where she fell in love with the distinct beauty of the islands, river, and wildlife.

Star loves the outdoors and enjoys any excuse to get outside and enjoy nature - and she is quickly learning to love the snow as well!  Her husband's family has a long history in northern New York.  His grandfather, veterinarian Dr. Bull, visited farms and held rabies clinics on Grindstone Island in the 1950s.  Star looks forward to contributing to land conservation efforts in her new "home".
