The Thousand Islands Land Trust (TILT) and the Thousand Islands Young Leaders Organization (TIYLO) would like to announce the official opening of the Zenda Community Garden at the Zenda Farm Preserve located West of Clayton on New York State Route 12E.
TILT and TIYLO started the Zenda Community Garden in hopes of serving Clayton and the surrounding communities as a whole. As much as the Community Garden is about gardening and nutrition, it is also about stimulating social interactions and helping our communities become more self-sustaining.
Over the past two weeks, 14 families have been working to condition and plant the nearly 6,000 square-foot garden. “It’s great to see families and individuals from surrounding communities working together. In addition to growing healthy food the gardeners have become connected to the source from which their food comes, fostering a sense of trust and collaboration,” said Jake Tibbles, the Director of Stewardship at TILT.
Gardeners are responsible for tilling, constructing raised beds, erecting deer fencing, plant selection, planting and daily watering. As a “family style” community garden, gardeners are also responsible for harvesting produce and distributing it evenly amongst themselves. Excess produce will be donated to local food pantries.
The Zenda Community Garden has been made possible through the support of Fourth Coast, Delukes Garden Center, Wellesley Island Building Supply, White’s Lumber, W.D. Bach Excavating and Consulting, Stub Carlisle and Son, Cross Island Farms and Home Depot.
