TILT Offers Three Bike Treks This Summer

This summer, the Thousand Islands Land Trust (TILT) will host three Bike Treks as a part of their TILTreks & Talks series. As in the past, the bike treks will be led by TILT volunteer, Elaine Tack, and are an active way to discover some of the region’s largest and most environmentally diverse islands. The bike excursions are scheduled for July 11th, Aug. 4th and Aug. 15th and will take place on Grindstone Island, Wellesley Island, and Ontario’s Wolfe Island, respectively.

On Sat. July 11th, bikers will meet at 9am at the TILT office, 135 John St. Clayton, where they will boat over to Grindstone Island for a tour of the historic island’s interior, which is significantly different from the view of the island by boat. Sights to be seen are vast grasslands, Grindstone’s original schoolhouses and the cheese factory, as well as the Songbird Forest and other TILT preserves.

At 10am on Tues. Aug. 4th a Bike Trek will explore the historic trails of Boldt Farm on Wellesley Island. After meeting at the TI Country Club’s restaurant, Hacker’s, bikers will have access to private trails and will explore the third largest island’s wetlands, marshes, and open fields.

The final Bike Trek will be on Sat. Aug. 15th beginning at 10am. Bikers will tour Wolfe Island, departing from the Canadian Customs House. Be sure to bring proper identification to enter Canada (i.e. a passport). This Bike Trek will travel through beautiful farmland on this largest island in the St. Lawrence. It is also an opportunity to see the new wind towers from a local perspective. We suggest that you catch the ferry from Cape Vincent by 9:30am at the latest if that is how you will reach Canada’s Wolfe Island. For more information about the ferry visit, wolfeisland.com/ferry.php.

The Bike Treks are free of charge. If you wish to attend, please make reservations in advance by contacting the TILT office at 686-5345, or email events@tilandtrust.org. These Bike Treks are just a few of TILT’s many summer TILTreks & Talks encouraging living, learning, and conserving in the Thousand Islands. For more information or a complete schedule of the events, contact TILT.
