The Thousand Islands Land Trust's (TILT) tour of inland GrindstoneIsland will once again be led by Grindstone resident and know-it-all, Ken Deedy. There will be two tours this summer and the first will take place on the morning of Tuesday, July 28th. Unlike in previous years, this summer’s tours will take place on Mules— mechanical, not live— rather than on the old Grindstone school bus. Grindstone, the 4th largest island in the Thousand Islands, has a unique and interesting cultural and natural history. TILT has preserved over two thousand acres of the island, and Grindstone fulfills TILT's mission by providing natural beauty, wildlife habitats, and recreational opportunities to the members of the St. Lawrence River community. TILT, in partnership with Ducks Unlimited (DU), US Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS), and local landowners, has restored a number of pothole wetlands on the Rusho Preserve, and will restore a number of new potholes on the Howard-Smith Preserve. TILT also works with DU and USFWS, and students from SUNY School of Environmental Science and Forestry on the Delaney Bay Marsh fish ladder. These conserved areas will be featured on the tour as well as historical locations such as the original one-room schoolhouse, the abandoned Cheese Factory, and the little-known Civil War cemetery. Vibrant centers of Grindstone life such as Dodge Hall, the GrindstoneIslandChurch, and Potter’s Beach will be visited as well.

This TILTrek is for members. If you are interested in attending this TILTrek or would like to become a TILT member, please contact the TILT office at 686-5345. Transportation to Grindstone will be provided from the TILT office at 135 John Street, Clayton. Spaces are limited due to the limited passenger capacity of the vehicles, but if you can’t make it on this tour we will try our best to get you on the next one on August 11th!
