Kayaking TILTrek on Grass Lake

Launch your kayak or canoe and join the Thousand Islands Land Trust (TILT) and Indian River Lakes Conservancy (IRLC) for an evening paddle on Grass Lake on Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at 6:00 pm.  TILT is partnering with IRLC to explore one of the beautiful Indian River Lakes and IRLC’s Marc A.F. Baker Island Preserve. The Marc A.F. Baker Island Preserve, dedicated on July 11, 2009 by IRLC in memory of Dani Baker’s son, is a beautiful island in the southwest end of Grass Lake with 2.5 miles of undeveloped shoreline.

Grass Lake is home to many bird and mammal species, including Great Blue Herons, Common Loons, Ospreys, Bald Eagles, Belted Kingfishers, muskrats and beavers. The unique marsh and fen habitats surrounding the lake and island attract many animals to the area, and patient observers with a keen eye will be well rewarded.

Participants should sign up in advance by contacting TILT at 686-5345 or events@tilandtrust.org. If you need to rent a kayak, please sign up by July 5 so TILT can reserve the correct number of kayaks. Rentals are available for $15. Meet at the NYS DEC boat ramp at Grass Lake at 6:00 pm. To get there, take Cottage Hill Road out of Redwood, turn left on Burns Road, and make a right at the sign for NYS DEC Boat Launch. Take the gravel road all the way down to the boat launch.

This event is part of the Thousand Islands Land Trust's TILTreks & Talks series encouraging living, learning and conserving in the Thousand Islands. TILT will be offering more Treks this summer.  A full schedule is available on TILT's website. For more information or a complete schedule of events, contact TILT at 686-5345 or events@tilandtrust.org.
