The Macsherry Trail is a 3-mile long hiking trail in the Crooked Creek Preserve, located in Hammond, NY. (Download a trail map.) It has a long loop which takes you out to Crooked Creek and a lovely view of Chippewa Bay and the St. Lawrence River. The short loop winds through the successional forest. Whichever route you choose, you will see wetlands and beaver ponds, pine forests and hardwood stands, and the rocks of the Canadian Shield. Wildlife is abundant.
There are both geocache and earthcache sites on the trail. For more information, visit www.geocaching.com, www.earthcache.org or www.geosociety.org.
The Macsherry Trail is located at the line between Jefferson and St. Lawrence Counties. Take Rt. 12 north from Alexandria Bay (or south from Ogdensburg) to the Kring Point exit. Turn north toward the park and take an immediate right onto Indian Point Road. The trailhead is approximately one mile down the road on the right.
We recommend you wear waterproof footgear in spring or after a rainfall, and long pants. Bring insect repellent.
The children of Dick & Mary Macsherry, Watertown & Alexandria Bay, helped develop the trail in honor of their parents' 50th wedding anniversary.
