This past December the Thousand Islands community lost an incredible friend and true River Rat, John Durand.

For those of you who did not have the opportunity to get to know John, he had an unconditional love for the St. Lawrence and when it came to helping others, he was a man of unwavering generosity and compassion. 

John spent much of his business career as co-owner of the Wellesley Island Building Supply. And prior to that, he was owner of the famed Crazy Horse Saloon in Alexandria Bay. But outside of the office, John spent his time on the River as an avid waterfowler, fisherman and deer hunter.

There is no question that John’s love and passion for conservation and the outdoors was forged early on, born from the Durand Family’s unwavering appreciation, awareness, and understanding of our region’s natural resources. Most importantly, John realized that he had the capacity to make a difference and he had the will to do so.

John’s support of TILT first began in 2003 and continued throughout the years.  Often, through the Wellesley Island Building Supply, he played an integral role in making TILT’s stewardship project possible. Most recently, with the donation of lumber and materials, John helped improve access at the Chippewa Bay Preserve and Nature Trail. With John’s support, TILT built a set of access stairs, several foot bridges and a wildlife observation tower, ensuing safe access and enhancing the overall trail experience. 

While TILT and the entire River community have lost a great man, we celebrate the meaningful and lasting impacts that John made possible. We are forever grateful.
