New Observation Tower Rises at Schmeer Preserve as Visitor Improvements Take Shape

The Thousand Islands Land Trust (TILT) is excited to announce the completion of the new observation tower at the Edward & Marlene Schmeer Signature Preserve in Cape Vincent, marking a major milestone in enhancing public access and outdoor experiences at the Preserve. Additional improvements, including the nature trail and parking area, are currently underway.

The observation tower was constructed by Hill High Excavation and is centrally located within the Preserve. From the tower, visitors will enjoy panoramic views of Lake Ontario, the Preserve’s restored grasslands, a Lake Ontario barrier wetland, Wilson Bay, and the historic Tibbetts Point Lighthouse. The project was funded through the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Conservation Partnership Program, co-administered by the Land Trust Alliance.

Work is ongoing to complete a short nature trail—approximately 750 feet in length—that will guide visitors through the Preserve to the observation tower. Construction of a new parking area is also in progress, helping to improve accessibility and visitor safety while minimizing impacts to surrounding natural resources.

The Edward & Marlene Schmeer Preserve showcases a diverse mix of restored grassland and wetland habitats that support pollinators, birds, and other wildlife. Native grasses and wildflowers, including black-eyed Susans, flourish across the property, reflecting TILT’s continued commitment to habitat restoration and stewardship along the Lake Ontario shoreline.

TILT invites the public to celebrate the grand opening of the Preserve June 5th 2026 during the Edward & Marlene Schmeer Premiere Preserve Trek. The Preserve remains closed until construction is completed.
