Farewells: Remembering Joan Dodge Rueckert

From her childhood on Wild Goose Island to the years she and her husband Fred spent caring for Mid River Farm, Joan Dodge Rueckert’s deep Grindstone Island roots shaped her lifelong dedication to preserving the Thousand Islands.

A TILT Board member from 1997 to 2005, Joan served during years that shaped the very foundation of the organization today, supporting pivotal projects including the conservation of Zenda Farms, Crooked Creek, Otter Creek, and the early development of the Rivergate Trail. These efforts marked the  birth of TILT’s Signature Preserves, and Joan’s steady leadership helped propel their momentum.

Joan’s devotion to Grindstone Island ran deep. Mid River Farm —conserved in 1988 as one of TILT’s first island properties— became a hub for stewardship and community. She championed trail maintenance, the barn renovation, protection of Lindley  Point, and established the Grindstone Island Conservation Fund. As a member of TILT’s Mid River Committee, she guided the future of island conservation while graciously hosting coffees, gatherings, and major events with unmatched warmth and hospitality.

Her support of TILT was a natural extension of her wider commitment to service. Joan brought dedication and talent to  all she undertook. Beyond conservation, she was an accomplished gardener and a thoughtful steward of place, guided by a creative and deeply kind spirit. Joan leaves behind a legacy written into Grindstone’s trails, shorelines, gardens, and communities. Her grace, stewardship,  and love for the Thousand Islands will  continue to inspire all  who cherish this remarkable place.
