Preserve History

Once a thriving dairy and beef farm, Zenda operated into the 1960s. Today, its agricultural heritage is preserved, and its meadows are conserved to support grassland birds, a species in steep decline across eastern North America.

The house and boathouse, built around 1890 by Martha Reed Mitchell on the waterfront, later belonged to actor-manager James Hackett, who named the property after The Prisoner of Zenda. In 1939, entrepreneur Merle Youngs expanded it into a 700-acre, state-of-the-art dairy and beef farm, home to the region’s first automatic bottling plant. After Youngs’ death in 1958, John MacFarlane inherited the property, selling much of it in the 1960s due to economic challenges. In 1997, LoisJean and John MacFarlane donated 107 acres and ten historic Jamesway buildings to TILT, ensuring that the land would be conserved for future generations.
