The Tern Grid project, a partnership between TILT and Save The River, protects nesting habitat for Common Terns, a NYS Threatened Species.
Common Terns nest on open rocks but struggle to defend against gulls and other predators. The grid’s mesh allows terns through while blocking gulls, owls, and hawks. Installed on Eagle Wings Shoals and Tidd Island in April, it’s removed in August after chicks fledge.
